What is PTSD?
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after experiencing or witnessing a deeply traumatic event. It affects men and women of all ages, without discrimination. Common signs of PTSD include:
- Persistent thoughts about the trauma that interfere with daily activities
- Dissociation — feelings of emotional numbness or detachment from thoughts and body sensations
- Heightened alertness — including difficulty sleeping, irritability, and being easily startled
- Flashbacks — vivid memories or nightmares related to the trauma, triggered by reminders
- Depression — feelings of hopelessness, low self-worth, and challenges in relationships
Causes of PTSD
PTSD can arise from a wide variety of traumatic incidents. Both children and adults may develop PTSD after experiencing abuse, assault, or violence. Occupations like social work, emergency response, and military service also increase exposure to traumatic events that can lead to PTSD.
